What to Know About Your Child’s First Week in Daycare or Preschool

Starting daycare or preschool is a big milestone—for children and parents. At Hearts and Minds Daycare LLC, we understand that the first week can come with excitement, questions, and a few nerves. Knowing what to expect can make this transition smoother and more positive for everyone.

Here’s what families should know as they prepare for their child’s first week.

1. Transitions Take Time and That’s Normal

It’s completely normal for children to need time to adjust. Some children jump right in, while others may take a few days (or weeks) to feel comfortable. You may notice:

  • Short periods of separation anxiety

  • Changes in sleep or appetite

  • Big emotions at drop-off

These responses are developmentally appropriate and temporary. Our teachers are trained to support children with patience, consistency, and care.

2. Keep Drop-Offs Calm and Consistent

A confident, predictable drop-off helps children feel secure. We recommend:

  • Arriving on time each day

  • Keeping goodbyes brief and positive

  • Avoiding lingering, even if it feels difficult

Children take emotional cues from adults—when you show confidence, they feel it too.

3. Routine Is Your Child’s Best Friend

During the first week, children are learning a new rhythm. At HMDC, we follow structured daily routines that include:

  • Play-based learning

  • Group activities

  • Meals and rest time

  • Outdoor or movement opportunities

Routines help children feel safe and understand what comes next, which builds independence and confidence.

4. Label Everything

Please label all personal items, including:

  • Bags and backpacks

  • Water bottles

  • Extra clothing

This helps us keep belongings organized and ensures items make it back home at the end of the day.

5. Communication Is Key

We encourage families to share anything that may help us support your child, such as:

  • Comfort strategies

  • Allergies or sensitivities

  • Changes at home

We also use Brightwheel to keep families informed with daily updates, photos, and messages so you can stay connected throughout the day.

6. Expect Growth—Even in the First Week

You may be surprised by how quickly your child begins to:

  • Build relationships

  • Follow classroom routines

  • Use new words or social skills

The first week lays the foundation for social-emotional development, independence, and a love for learning.

7. Give Yourself Grace Too

Transitions are emotional for parents as well. Trust that your child is being cared for in a safe, nurturing environment by professionals who truly care about their growth and well-being.
